The Orioles - The Lord's Prayer (45)
Duration: 2:25
The Lord's Prayer written by Albert Hay Malotte performed by The Orioles recorded 10 October 1950 originally released as Jubilee 5045 in November 1950 (This is a 1951 or 1952 pressing, but it is a first pressing of this on 45) In hindsight, it seems fitting that they would do this song on the last session to feature the original Orioles - Earlington Carl "Sonny Til" Tilghman (lead), Alexander Sharp (tenor), Tommy Gaither (2nd tenor/guitar), George Nelson (baritone), Johnny Reed (bass/bass). Sid Bass is on piano. Normally, Johnny Reed was the Orioles' designated driver. But, Tommy Gaither was at the wheel on 5 November 1950, when the car crashed into a drive-in restaurant, killing Tommy and injuring Johnny and George, who were removed unconscious from the wreckage. (Sonny and Alex, along with Deborah Chessler, were in another car.) Tommy had taken a curve too fast and lost control of the car, which had careened across the highway, rolling over three times before crashing into the restaurant in the Essex section of Baltimore. Tommy was 31 years young.
